Scientists Have Found That Intelligence Is Passed From Mothers, Not From Fathers

Scientists have found that the intelligence of a person is passed on from the mother and that genetically, the X chromosome determines our intelligence.

There are a thousand genes in the X chromosome and they affect your level of perception.  Until recently it was believed that both parents make an equal contribution to the intelligence of their child, but this may be correct and arguable at the same time.

Genetics is, without doubt, a highly complex area and people need to approach this field of research from an objective perspective.  First of all, we need to know something about how the X and Y chromosomes work.  A chromosome is a chain-like formation composed of nucleic acids and protein, which stores and transfers genetic information.  There is a pair of chromosomes in every cell of a person’s body, two X chromosomes in females, and one X and one Y chromosome in males.

The gender-specific genes carry genetic characteristics which may be activated or deactivated, which means that they will or will not impact genetic development.  This means that if a certain characteristic is affected by the mother, the paternal genes are deactivated, and vice versa.

It is actually the structure of these genes that forms the base for research on intelligence.  It seems that there is a greater probability of women having an impact on cognitive abilities since they possess two X chromosomes, compared to the one chromosome that men carry.  However, there is definitely more than just the X chromosomes to this theory of intelligence.

Scientists tested this theory using genetically modified mice and it was found that the embryonic subjects administered with maternal chromosomes developed a larger skull and brain.  The test subjects that were administered with more paternal genetic material had a larger body but smaller skull and brain.  Some other intriguing observations were made by the researchers, such as the identification of six different areas of the brain that contained either exclusively maternal genes or exclusively paternal genes.

In 1984, there was a study of brain development and genomic conditioning conducted at the University of Cambridge in which scientists concluded that more material was provided to brain centers by maternal genetics.  Another study by researchers from a Scottish government agency involved about 12,000 people from 14 to 22 years old.

The subjects were interviewed and monitored on how their intelligence developed and factors such as ethnic and educational backgrounds were taken into account.  The researchers came to the conclusion that the mother’s IQ was the best indicator of intelligence.

The one fact that can be determined from this is that mothers definitely have a great influence on the cognitive capacity of their children.

Of course, it is not just about genetics, but also the role that nutrition and nurture play on the child’s intellectual development.  All the signs are that our mothers are responsible for much of our brain power and we should appreciate this and be grateful to all our moms!
